In this work I investigate the antithesis between the ancient and the contemporary, the significant and the inconsequential. Through the aesthetic exploration of engraving, gold leaf and obscure text, I am able to bring together these binary oppositions in a visual format. Strong conflict can be observed through the visual implications of the illuminated text. The essence of what looks to be a meaningful quotation, actually reads as an entirely unrelated excerpt of appropriated modern culture. The suggestion that the text may be sacred is deconstructed when it becomes evident that the reality is trivial and weightless, the content derived from secular life.
